Puppis, or the Stern, is part of a huge constellation called Argo Navis. Peoples of the
Mediterranean and Arabic tribes easily saw the constellation in the winter months when the nights were long and there was little to do. The constellation was named by Greek observers who fancied they saw Athena lifting the famous craft, the Argo, into the heavens to memorialize its voyage in search of the Golden Fleece.
More recently, the French astronomer Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille broke Argo Navis into three smaller constellations. In 1752 LacailleΓÇö who was known as the ΓÇ£Columbus of the Southern SkyΓÇ¥ because he was the first European to survey the Southern HemisphereΓÇöpublished his
